International award-winning humanitarian documentary photographer Dr. Larry Louie presents “Beyond the Darkness,”  an exploration of his photographs from the Third World, from, at Blue Sky Gallery, 122 NW 8th Ave., Portland.

Dr. Louie, an optometrist from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has combined his love of travel photography with a passion for enhancing people’s view of the world through documentary work that often promotes the work of charities helping people in Third-World countries. He is particularly interested in illustrating challenges people are encountering in a world facing rapid urbanization and globalization. He wants to engage people in inspiring stories of perseverance and strength, not only of those who have found themselves caught in such a plight, but also amazing individuals and organizations that are lending a helping hand. He hopes his photographs will be able to tell the stories and make a difference, and to reveal light that is found in the darkest of places.

His photographs have been exhibited and published widely in Europe and North America, and he has compiled a long list of high honors in international professional competitions. IPA/Lucie Awards competition director Sarah Cho describes Larry’s photographs as “captivating and sincere and reflect his passion for the medium.  Larry Louie has a very distinctive style, straddling the fine line of a photojournalist and documentarian. His images are as rich and evocative as the subjects (on) which he focuses.”

Dr. Louie’s talk is a joint presentation of Blue Sky Gallery and Portland Photographers’ Forum. His lecture is free and open to the public. You may "click here" to see his online gallery.
